Falling behind on your work is something everyone experiences, but what’s an effective strategy to catch up? As a small business owner, it may be more of a challenge, considering how some resources aren’t readily available for someone starting a company. However, there are plenty of useful practices that will help you chip away at your mountain of work.

Catching Up on Your Workload

Time Management
It’s been said time and time again, but that’s only because it’s true. Managing the time you spend at work in an efficient, organized manner will help you tackle your to-do list one task at a time.

  • Try to keep a clean desk to save you time from locating papers
  • Keep a calendar with your meetings and due dates

Priorities
Obviously, some tasks and issues are more important than others, and will require more, if not immediate, attention. Being aware of which is which, and carefully ranking them on your to-do list is a good way to prepare yourself (and coworkers) for catching up on your workload.

  • Communication with your coworkers is HUGE. Be firm, but relaxed – nobody likes being yelled at or talked down to. Just be mindful.

Delegation
If it’s early in your small business’ life, this can be extra challenging. Whether it’s that you don’t have enough employees to help out, or you just don’t know about putting your new company in someone else’s hands. BUT, you’re going to have to trust someone sooner or later, so make sure you’re hiring competent, trustworthy employees – and utilize them!

  • If you’re still worried or even just curious at the end of the day, you can always check in with whoever you’ve delegated the task to. Just be cautious not to micromanage!

Don’t Stress
This is nearly always hardest part – but it’s critical that we manage our stress, and don’t try to shoulder the collective workload by ourselves. People do their best, quality work when they’re not feeling overwhelmed. Finding a balance between work and home life isn’t easy, but it’s more than worth the effort.

  • Don’t take your work home with you; don’t bring home into work.
